The Longest-Running LGBTQ+ Bar in San Francisco

The Stud stands as San Francisco's longest-operating LGBTQ+ bar and holds the distinction of being the first co-op nightclub in the United States. Since May 27, 1966, this South of Market institution has embodied radical inclusivity, cultural innovation, and the "weird and wonderful" spirit that defines San Francisco's queer community.

Founded on Radical Welcome

George Matson and Alexis Muir opened The Stud at 1535 Folsom Street in 1966. Muir, a transgender woman and great-niece of naturalist John Muir, became sole owner by the early 1970s and established the bar's defining philosophy with a simple sign: "Everyone is welcome here."

This motto represented revolutionary inclusivity. While most SoMa gay bars of that era excluded women, gender non-conforming individuals, and drag queens, The Stud welcomed all communities from day one. This radical acceptance created a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ people seeking authentic self-expression.

Punk, New Wave, and Musical Innovation

The Stud pioneered punk and new wave music in San Francisco's LGBTQ+ nightlife scene. During the 1980s, it became the first gay bar in the city to "go punk," hosting Monday night playlists described as "the most radical and inventive playlist in the city."

This musical fearlessness attracted diverse crowds and positioned The Stud as a cultural incubator where LGBTQ+ people and allies could experience cutting-edge sounds in an accepting environment.

Home of Experimental Drag

The Stud served as epicenter for irreverent, political, and experimental drag performance. The bar became a hangout for the Cockettes, the famous acid drag troupe that included legendary performer Sylvester.

Long-running events like "Trannyshack" transformed The Stud into a laboratory for gender performance, political commentary, and artistic expression. The bar's aesthetic evolved from western themes to psychedelic black light murals by legendary leather artist Chuck Arnett, reflecting San Francisco's ever-changing countercultural spirit.

The Collective Ownership Revolution

In 2016, The Stud faced closure due to significant rent increases threatening to eliminate this historic space. Community members organized to preserve the bar, and a collective of nightlife professionals: including artists, DJs, and performers such as Honey Mahogany, Siobhan Aluvalot, Vivvyanne Forevermore, and Rachel Ryan: purchased the business.

The Stud became the first co-op nightclub in the United States, initially operating as a worker-owned cooperative and later as a collective with employees. This ownership model ensured the bar remained true to its community-focused mission while providing workers with equity and decision-making power.

Pandemic Closure and 2024 Resurrection

The Stud closed in May 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, joining countless LGBTQ+ spaces lost during this devastating period. However, the collective's commitment to preserving this historic institution resulted in a triumphant reopening in 2024 at 1123 Folsom Street near 7th Street.

The resurrection of The Stud demonstrates the enduring power of LGBTQ+ community organizing and the determination to preserve spaces that serve as sanctuaries for self-expression, cultural experimentation, and radical welcome.

For readers of gay romance books, MM novels, and LGBTQ+ fiction, The Stud's story illustrates the real-world importance of the community spaces depicted in queer literature.
