The Hunt Begins
The contract was simple: eliminate the vampire terrorizing the northern villages. Payment upon proof of death. Standard work for a witcher.
Kael tracked his prey through three provinces, following a trail of drained livestock and whispered rumors. The creature was careful, disciplined, avoiding human casualties that would bring armies instead of lone hunters. This wasn't a mindless beast. This was something ancient, calculated, and far more dangerous than the village elders understood.

The abandoned castle stood against the mountain like a broken tooth. Kael's mutations allowed him to sense the unnatural presence within, a cold pressure against his consciousness that spoke of centuries, not decades. His silver sword felt inadequate.
He found the vampire in the great hall, waiting.
When Predators Meet
"I wondered when you'd arrive," the vampire said without turning. His voice carried the weight of aristocracy, educated and refined. "They always send witchers eventually."
Kael maintained his distance, silver blade ready. "Your kind always talk too much before dying."
The vampire turned. Kael's breath caught, an involuntary response his training had never prepared him for. The creature was beautiful in a way that transcended mortal aesthetics. Dark hair framed a face sculpted by immortality, sharp features softened by lips that promised both danger and something else entirely. Eyes like polished amber held Kael's gaze with unsettling intensity.
"Do they?" The vampire smiled, revealing elongated canines. "I wouldn't know. I've killed every witcher sent after me. But you already suspected that, didn't you?"

The Dance
"My name is Davian," the vampire offered, circling slowly. "If you're going to try killing me, we should at least be properly introduced."
"Names don't matter to the dead."
"Don't they?" Davian's expression shifted, something almost vulnerable flickering across his features. "I've had mine for three hundred years. It's all that remains of who I was before."
Kael attacked. Speed enhanced by alchemical preparations, blade singing through air toward the vampire's throat. Davian moved like smoke, impossibly fast, redirecting the strike with bare hands against silver that should have burned him. They collided, supernatural strength meeting mutations engineered to fight monsters.
The clash sent them across the hall, moving faster than human eyes could follow. Davian's strength was overwhelming, but Kael's training provided precision. They fought through crumbling columns and shattered furniture, neither able to gain advantage. Kael felt his heart racing, from exertion, yes, but also from something else. The proximity, the physical contact, the way Davian's body moved against his own.
When Steel Becomes Stillness
"You're magnificent," Davian breathed, pinning Kael against stone wall, silver sword clattering away. "I've fought witchers before, but never one like you."
Their faces were inches apart. Kael could smell him: not death or decay, but something like night-blooming jasmine and old leather. His enhanced senses picked up impossible details: the way Davian's chest didn't rise with breath, the absolute stillness of a body that no longer needed life's rhythms, the cold heat radiating from immortal flesh.
"You could have killed me," Kael managed.
"Yes."
"Why didn't you?"
Davian's grip loosened slightly. "Because I haven't felt anything in a century. Not until I saw you walk through that door."

The Truth in Darkness
"The village elders lied," Davian said, releasing Kael but not stepping back. "I haven't fed on anything with a heartbeat in fifty years. The livestock deaths were wolves. I pay farmers to spread rumors, to keep hunters coming, because…"
He trailed off, something broken in his ageless eyes.
"Because you're lonely," Kael finished, understanding flooding through him. "You want someone to end it."
"I wanted to want that," Davian corrected softly. "But then you arrived, and I realized I don't want death. I want: " His hand rose, fingertips ghosting along Kael's jaw with supernatural gentleness. "I want to feel again. To touch someone who doesn't fear me. To remember what it was like to desire and be desired."
Kael's training screamed warnings. Every instinct said this was manipulation, vampire glamour designed to create false emotions. But his mutations made him resistant to mental influence, and what he felt was achingly, dangerously real.
"This is insane," Kael whispered.
"Yes." Davian's thumb traced Kael's lower lip. "Will you kill me anyway?"
The Choice
Kael retrieved his silver sword. Davian didn't move, simply watched with that heartbreaking stillness vampires possessed. Three hundred years of existence, waiting for an ending that would never bring peace.
"I should," Kael said, silver blade reflecting moonlight through broken windows.
"You should," Davian agreed.
Instead, Kael sheathed the weapon. "Show me."
"Show you what?"
"That you mean it. That you're not the monster they described." Kael stepped closer, closing the distance Davian had allowed. "Prove you can still feel without taking."

What followed was neither gentle nor entirely consensual in the traditional sense: two predators negotiating desire through touch that bordered on violence, testing boundaries between pleasure and pain, life and death. Davian's hands were everywhere, cold fire against Kael's skin, movements controlled despite obvious hunger. Kael matched him, forcing the vampire to remember sensation beyond feeding, to experience touch as connection rather than consumption.
They came together on cold stone, armor and clothing discarded, two bodies that shouldn't work finding rhythm in their differences. Davian's restraint was absolute even as passion overwhelmed control: never breaking skin, never taking more than freely offered. Kael discovered that cold flesh could burn, that a heartless chest could house desperate need, that immortal lips could whisper prayers to forgotten gods.
When Dawn Threatens
"You should leave before sunrise," Davian said afterward, bodies still tangled on scattered cloaks. "Collect your payment. Tell them the vampire is dead."
"Is he?"
Davian's laugh held centuries of sorrow. "The monster they feared? Perhaps. But vampires don't change, witcher. We are what we are."
Kael traced the line of Davian's jaw. "Neither do witchers. We're made to kill your kind."
"Then why haven't you?"
"Because maybe both of us are more than what we were made to be."

The Leaving
Kael left the castle as dawn broke, silver sword unused, contract unfulfilled. Behind him, Davian stood in shadows that would protect him through another day. Ahead stretched the road back to civilization, to explanations that wouldn't satisfy, to a choice that defied everything he'd been created for.
He would return. They both knew it. The dance wasn't finished: it had only just begun.
