The Protocol of Passion: A Whitehall Affairs Gay Romance Novel

A passion that breaks all protocols. A secret that could destroy everything.

When Sven Eriksen joins the UK government’s LGBTQ+ International Affairs desk, he brings two things: a brilliant, analytical mind and an unwavering commitment to protocol. The Danish-British policy expert has spent his life building walls of precision and professionalism. He is not prepared for Tim Ashworth.

Tim is everything Sven is not—charismatic, chaotic, and dangerously charming. As the department’s golden boy, he navigates high-stakes diplomacy with effortless wit and a smile that disarms everyone. Their first meeting ignites an immediate, electric rivalry. Their clash of styles threatens to derail their first joint mission to Berlin, but a hotel booking error changes everything. One room. One bed. Two men who can barely stand each other.

In the shadow of international diplomacy, the line between hatred and undeniable attraction begins to blur. A drunken confession in a Soho bar—”God, I’ve fancied you from day one”—shatters their fragile truce and ignites a passion that consumes them both. But their world is one of secrets. Returned to London, they forge a dangerous double life, hiding their scorching affair between policy meetings and official functions.

Read with pride as Sven and Tim navigate the agonizing thrill of their hidden relationship. From the electric tension of shared glances across conference tables to the reckless heat of a kiss in a deserted office corridor, every stolen moment could cost them their careers. Their connection deepens through clandestine dates, a liberating night at a gay club, and the tender, raw intimacy of a shared sauna, where truths can no longer be hidden in the steam.

As their love grows, so does the risk. A work trip to Paris tests their resolve. A dangerous international crisis forces them to rely on each other in ways they never imagined. When a face from the past threatens to expose them, they must make an impossible choice: is their love a catastrophic professional error, or the most inevitable thing in their lives?

Title: “The most emotionally intelligent gay romance I’ve read all year.”

I picked up The Protocol of Passion expecting a standard workplace romance. What I got was a masterclass in character development and emotional authenticity. Sven and Tim are not just archetypes—they are fully realized, complicated men whose flaws make them achingly real.

The slow burn in this gay romance novel is excruciating in the best possible way. The author understands that true tension isn’t just about physical attraction—it’s about two people who challenge each other at their core. Sven’s rigidity and Tim’s chaos aren just personality quirks; they’re defenses built from years of navigating a world that demands performance. Watching those defenses crumble, brick by brick, across 41 chapters was deeply satisfying.

The Berlin hotel scene (you know the one) is masterfully written. The author doesn’t rush the intimacy. They earn it. And when Sven finally says “I love you” in that kitchen in Chapter 29, I actually cried. Not because it was sad, but because it felt so earned. So real.

The international settings—Berlin, Paris, Brussels—are vividly rendered. The diplomatic details ring true (the author clearly did their research). But the heart of this book is the relationship. The way Sven and Tim learn to communicate, to fight, to forgive. The way they choose each other, again and again, despite the risks.

If you’re looking for best MM romance that combines heat with genuine emotional depth, buy this book. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Five stars. I’ll be first in line for Book Two.

Title: “Steamy, smart, and utterly unputdownable.”

Let me start by saying I am a picky reader of MM romance books. I’ve read hundreds, and I can spot lazy writing from a mile away. The Protocol of Passion is anything but lazy.

The premise—rivals forced to share a bed—is a classic trope, but this author reinvents it. Sven and Tim’s dynamic is fresh and electric from their very first exchange. The dialogue crackles. You can feel the tension radiating off the page. I found myself holding my breath during their arguments, literally leaning into my Kindle.

The steamy MM romance scenes are, frankly, spectacular. They’re hot—make no mistake—but they’re also character-driven. Every kiss, every touch, advances the emotional plot. The sauna scene in Chapter 25? I had to fan myself. The morning after scenes (all three of them!) are tender and raw and beautifully varied.

But what elevated this book for me was the supporting cast. Maggie is a treasure—a queer boss who sees everything and protects her people without fanfare. Raj provides comic relief without becoming a caricature. Even the brief appearance of Eleanor Ashworth (Tim’s mother) is perfectly pitched.

The international crisis arc in the final third of the book raises the stakes beyond the personal. Watching Sven and Tim function as a team under pressure, watching them hold each other up when everything is falling apart—that’s when I knew this wasn’t just a romance. It’s a story about partnership. About what it really means to have someone’s back.

Read with pride, indeed. This is LGBTQ+ fiction at its finest. Five stars. I’m already recommending it to my book club.

Title: “Finally, a gay romance that respects my intelligence.”

As a gay man who came out later in life, I am so tired of romance novels where the characters fall into bed after three chapters and call it love. The Protocol of Passion is the antidote.

Sven and Tim are professionals. Adults. Their reluctance to act on their attraction isn’t manufactured drama—it’s a realistic response to real-world consequences. The “rules” they establish in Chapter 20 felt painfully familiar. Anyone who has ever hidden a relationship at work will recognize the exhausting calculus of stolen glances and careful distance.

The author handles the coming-out-adjacent elements with nuance. Neither man is in the closet, exactly, but their workplace forces a form of hiding that is its own kind of prison. The wedding dance scene in Chapter 35 is a masterwork of quiet rebellion. I cheered out loud.

I also appreciated that the sex scenes (and yes, they are steamy MM romance at its best) serve the story. They’re not gratuitous. Each intimate moment teaches us something new about the characters—their vulnerabilities, their desires, their growing trust.

The international settings are a bonus. The author clearly knows government work. The crisis in Eastern Europe felt chillingly real. Watching Sven become Tim’s anchor during those dark days was profoundly moving.

This is gay literature disguised as genre fiction, and I mean that as the highest compliment. The Protocol of Passion is now on my permanent re-read list. If you only buy one gay romance novel this year, make it this one.

    Read with pride, everyone.

  • The Male Variation: A Novel of Love and Ballet

In the gilded, punishing world of the Teatro Colón, eighteen-year-old Santiago Vargas is a masterpiece of contradictions: a powerfully masculine prodigy in the graceful art of ballet, a son trapped by traditional expectations, and a young man silently drowning in a truth he dare not speak.

Haunted by an awakening attraction to the male bodies that share his stage and showers, Santiago’s disconnection from his own life deepens. His salvation—and his ruin—arrives in the form of Mateo Casales, a legendary forty-one-year-old former star hired as his private tutor. In the intimate silence of Mateo’s studio, rigorous correction evolves into profound connection. Mateo’s hands, which teach the language of movement, begin to speak a different, more dangerous dialect—one of recognition, desire, and a shared loneliness that echoes across a twenty-three-year chasm.

The Male Variation is a sweeping, 54-chapter epic that charts the terrifyingly beautiful collision of two souls. Santiago, grappling with the seismic decision to come out in a society and a family that may reject him, finds in Mateo not just a teacher, but the first person who truly sees him. Mateo, a ghost haunted by the memory of a past love sacrificed to fear, is terrified that history is repeating itself, even as he’s irresistibly drawn to Santiago’s talent and vulnerability.

Their love story unfolds in stolen moments: in the hallowed darkness of an empty theatre, in the rain-soaked sanctuary of a private home, and in the secret language of music and touch. But the outside world is relentless. From the claustrophobic gossip of the company locker room to the devastating, public fallout of an anonymous letter and a tabloid scandal, Santiago and Mateo are forced to navigate a labyrinth of professional ruin, familial heartbreak, and societal condemnation.

At the heart of the storm, Santiago is handed the role of a lifetime: Don José in Carmen, a character destroyed by a forbidden, all-consuming passion. He must decide whether to hide or to channel his own forbidden love into a performance that could redeem or destroy him. Meanwhile, Mateo faces an impossible choice: deny their love to save Santiago’s soaring career, or stand proudly in the light, accepting the cost.

This is more than a romance; it is a profound exploration of artistry, identity, and the courage it takes to live authentically. It delves into the eroticism of the dancer’s form, the intimate cartography of a shared soul, and the brutal, beautiful cost of choosing love over safety. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Buenos Aires and the demanding world of professional ballet, the novel is a symphony of emotion—tragic, romantic, erotic, and ultimately triumphant.

For readers who crave deeply emotional, character-driven stories, The Male Variation offers an unforgettable journey. It is a testament to the power of love as the ultimate creative force and the most difficult, rewarding variation a person can ever dance.
