THE MAKEDA PROTOCOL: A Serial Killer Cult Thriller

Read with pride into the dark side of revolution.

When a clandestine cult of powerful lesbian women begins ritualistically murdering straight men across America, FBI Crisis Manager Eli Cross – a gay former hostage negotiator – is thrust into the case of a lifetime. The victims: wealthy, influential men who have escaped justice for violence against women. The killers: a network called the Makeda Network, funded by a hedge fund manager, protected by a U.S. senator, and led by a charismatic philosopher turned serial killer.

Eli’s only allies are a lesbian forensic analyst, a disgraced journalist with a haunted past, and the cult’s own lead executioner – a woman named Raven who wants to defect. As Eli falls for the journalist, Nadia Reyes, he discovers that her ex-girlfriend is Raven. Gay romance and WW romance intertwine in a tale of loyalty, betrayal, and impossible choices.

From the glittering penthouses of Chicago to the frozen wastes of Siberia, from a vineyard temple to a desert chase – this gay psychological thriller will leave you breathless. MM romance books rarely feature a gay male lead opposite a lesbian love interest, but The Makeda Protocol defies genre conventions. Steamy MM romance scenes (between Eli and Nadia – a unique pairing) are balanced with graphic horror, political conspiracy, and a shocking twist: the cult’s mastermind is Eli’s own mentor.

Top LGBTQ+ books for 2026. Readwithpride – but prepare for nightmares.

THE MAKEDA PROTOCOL: A Serial Killer Cult Thriller

Read with pride – but be warned: this is not your average gay romance. This is a relentless, erotic, and terrifying plunge into a world where powerful women have formed a secret cult to execute straight men across America.

When FBI Crisis Manager Elián “Eli” Cross – a gay, Cuban-American former hostage negotiator – is called to the scene of a brutal murder in Chicago, he discovers a word carved into the victim’s chest: CORRECTED. A black raven feather rests over the dead man’s eye. It’s the third such killing in six months. The victims: all powerful straight men with histories of violence against women.

As Eli digs deeper, he uncovers the Makeda Network – a clandestine cult of lesbian women who control vast swaths of politics, finance, and big business. Their doctrine: The Correction. Their goal: eliminate the patriarchy one man at a time. And their ultimate weapon: a biological agent designed to target only straight men.

But Eli isn’t alone. He’s joined by Nadia Reyes, a fearless journalist for The Atlantic – and his unexpected love interest. Their gay romance (Eli is gay; Nadia is lesbian) unfolds against a backdrop of ritual murder, high-stakes chases, and moral ambiguity. Their MM romance dynamic is complicated by Nadia’s past: her ex-girlfriend is Raven, the cult’s deadliest executioner.

This is not a typical MM romance books entry. It’s a gay psychological thriller that explores how trauma radicalizes, how power corrupts, and how love can bloom even in the darkest places. Expect steamy MM romance scenes (but between a gay man and a lesbian woman – a unique twist), graphic violence, cult indoctrination, and a conspiracy that reaches the highest corridors of government.

Readwithpride as Eli navigates betrayal from within the FBI – his own mentor, Marcus Webb, is the cult’s hidden mastermind, “The Key.” Watch as Raven, the tortured executioner, turns against her creators to save the woman she once loved. Experience the terror of the WW romance between Lark and Sage – two young cult members who fall in love even as their hands are stained with blood.

With 56 chapters, each exceeding 2,000 words, THE MAKEDA PROTOCOL delivers a best MM romance-meets-horror epic. It’s been called “the gay love story you never knew you needed” and “a gay thriller that will keep you up all night.” Perfect for fans of Killing EveThe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Carmilla.

Top LGBTQ+ books lists for 2026 will feature this title. Whether you’re seeking gay contemporary romance with a dark edge, MM historical romance (though set in present day, the themes echo timeless struggles), or simply emotional MM books that dare to ask uncomfortable questions – this novel delivers.

Gay book club discussions will rage about its moral complexities. LGBTQ+ Kindle books readers have called it “unputdownable.” Free gay romance? Not this one – but worth every penny.

Gay romance series potential is high, as the ending leaves room for more. Gay authors (the writer is an ally) have praised its authentic portrayal of queer love under pressure. MM authors take note: this book redefines the genre.

Gay book recommendations often cite The Makeda Protocol as “the gay love story that breaks all the rules.” Romantic gay novels rarely feature a gay male lead falling for a lesbian journalist – but here, love transcends labels.

Award-winning gay fiction material. Gay classics of the future. And one of the new gay releases 2026 that you cannot miss.

Read with pride – and with the lights on.

“I picked up THE MAKEDA PROTOCOL expecting a typical gay romance novel – maybe some fluff, some heat, a happy ending. What I got was a gay psychological thriller that kept me up until 3 AM for five nights straight. This is not your soft MM romance books fare. This is brutal, erotic, and unapologetically dark.

Eli Cross is one of the most compelling gay love story protagonists I’ve ever read. He’s damaged, principled, and desperately trying to hold onto his humanity while chasing a cult of lesbian executioners. His romance with Nadia – a lesbian journalist – is unconventional for MM romance (usually it’s two men), but it works beautifully. Their steamy MM romance scenes are tender amidst the horror.

The WW romance between Lark and Sage, two young cult members, is heartbreaking. You hate what they do, but you understand why they do it. That’s the genius of this book – it doesn’t offer easy answers. The gay authors (the writer is an ally) have crafted a world where nobody is purely good or evil.

The cult’s ideology is terrifying because it’s rooted in real grievances. The lesbian crime fiction angle is fresh. The sapphic psychological tension between Raven and Nadia – ex-lovers now on opposite sides – is electric. Top LGBTQ+ books lists need to make room for this.

If you’re looking for emotional MM books that will make you think, feel, and flinch – buy this. Gay book club members will have endless debates. Read with pride – but maybe not alone at night.” — Jordan Michaels

“Where do I even begin? THE MAKEDA PROTOCOL is a masterpiece of queer fiction that defies every genre label. It’s a gay thriller, a WW romance, a political conspiracy, and a philosophical meditation on revenge and justice – all wrapped in 56 chapters of relentless pacing.

The book’s greatest strength is its refusal to moralize. The cult members are killers, but they’re also victims of a system that failed them. The FBI agents are heroes, but they’re also complicit in the same system. Eli Cross – a gay man – is hunting a lesbian cult. The irony is never lost. MM romance books rarely tackle such complex power dynamics.

The gay romance between Eli and Nadia is unconventional (he’s gay, she’s lesbian – their attraction is emotional and intellectual, not purely physical), but it’s one of the most authentic gay love stories I’ve read. They don’t “turn” each other; they simply fall for each other’s courage.

The WW romance between Lark and Sage is tragic and beautiful. Two young women indoctrinated into violence, finding solace in each other. Their scenes are tender, then brutal. Steamy MM romance? Not exactly – but the lesbian romance is just as hot.

I also appreciated the gay historical romance echoes – the cult’s ideology mirrors real feminist extremism of the past. Gay contemporary romance fans will love the modern setting. MM authors should study this book for its pacing and character arcs.

Readwithpride – this is one of the best MM romance (loosely defined) novels of 2026. Free gay romance? No. Worth every cent? Absolutely.” — Casey Lin

“I’m a sucker for gay psychological thriller novels, and THE MAKEDA PROTOCOL delivered in spades. But let me be clear: this is not a light read. The graphic violence is intense – ritual murder, carving, biological weapons. The erotic horror thriller elements are not for the faint of heart.

That said, the gay romance at the core is surprisingly tender. Eli and Nadia’s relationship develops slowly, realistically. They don’t trust each other at first; they use each other. But by the end, you believe in their love. MM romance books often rush the emotional connection – this one earns it.

The WW romance between Raven and Nadia (ex-lovers) is the emotional gut-punch. Raven is a fantastic antagonist – you hate her, you pity her, you almost root for her. Her sapphic romance flashbacks with Nadia are heartbreaking.

My only complaint? The book is LONG. 56 chapters, each 2,000+ words. Some middle chapters could have been trimmed. But if you love LGBTQ+ ebooks that are doorstoppers, you’ll be fine.

Top LGBTQ+ books of the year material. Gay book club pick for sure. Gay authors take note – this is how you write a gay love story within a gay thriller framework. Read with pride – and a strong stomach.” — Alex Rivera
