The author doesn’t shy away from the brutal costs of their choices, which made their victories all the sweeter. That said, it’s a minor quibble in a fantastic book. The love story is beautifully written, respectful, and powerful. The supporting cast, especially characters like Torven and Lyra, are vividly drawn. The concept of the canal as a symbol of their union is poetic genius.
