We are collectively yearning for the "unexpected places": those corners of the world and our own hearts that haven't been mapped by an algorithm. In the world of MM romance and queer fiction, this search for the rare and the beautiful is more than a trend; it’s a survival mechanism. It’s about finding the extraordinary in a life that has often been told it must remain ordinary.

When I sit down to write about men like Leo or Julian: characters who carry the weight of their histories like a second skin: I often find myself placing them in rare, isolated environments. Why? Because the "usual" places are cluttered with the expectations of others. In a crowded city, a man might keep his hands in his pockets. On a subway, he might avert his gaze from the man sitting opposite him.

But take those same two men and place them in an unexpected setting: a secluded cabin, a hidden trail, or a private cove where social nudism isn't a statement but a state of being: and the walls begin to crumble.

Rare experiences act as a catalyst for gay romance. They strip away the noise. When you are standing on the edge of a vast, awe-inspiring canyon, or when you are navigating the silent, sun-dappled intimacy of a naturist retreat, the "small self" takes over. The psychological research tells us that awe reduces our preoccupation with our own worries. It makes us feel connected to something larger. For the LGBTQ+ fiction reader, this is where the magic happens. It’s the moment a character realizes that their internal struggle: the fear of coming out, the sting of past rejection: is dwarfed by the sheer, breathtaking beauty of a genuine human connection.

The Rare Joy of Being Seen

There is a profound empathy in witnessing someone else’s "rare" moment. In my novels, I often explore the theme of bisexuality and the specific, sometimes rare, experience of finding a partner who truly sees the complexity of that identity. It isn’t just a plot point; it’s a sensory experience. It’s the smell of pine needles, the cold shock of lake water, and the warmth of a hand resting on a shoulder where it’s never been allowed to rest before.

In gay literature, we often talk about "the gaze." But there is a rarer version of this: the gaze that doesn't judge. This is why many of my stories touch on themes of nudism. There is an incredible, rare beauty in a man finally feeling comfortable in his own skin, standing under the sun without the armor of clothing or the mask of societal expectations. This isn't about the physical; it's about the psychological liberation of being "unmasked."

Finding beauty in these moments requires a certain level of courage. It’s the courage to be "unusual." Our world often rewards the predictable, but the human soul craves the rare. Whether it’s a gay historical romance that unearths a forgotten moment of queer joy or a gay thriller where the tension leads to a rare moment of absolute trust, we are all looking for that spark of the unexpected.

You might ask, "Dick, how do I find these experiences in my own life?"

It starts with intentionality. It starts with choosing the best MM romance that challenges your perspective rather than just confirming it.
